Leader of the Official Opposition
Naheed K. Nenshi was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly for Edmonton-Strathcona on June 23, 2025.
He is currently the Leader of the Alberta New Democratic Party and the Leader of the Official Opposition of Alberta.
Prior to serving with the Legislative Assembly, Mr. Nenshi served three terms as the mayor of Calgary from 2010 to 2021. Under his leadership Calgary was named one of the most livable cities in the world. He led the city through multiple states of emergency, including the 2013 floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, and was awarded the 2014 World Mayor Prize by the City Mayors Foundation.
Before entering public office, Mr. Nenshi worked as a management consultant and taught nonprofit management at Mount Royal University.
He holds a bachelor of commerce degree from the University of Calgary and a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Raised in Calgary, Mr. Nenshi is passionate about public service and inclusive civic engagement.
He was the 987th Member to be sworn into the Legislative Assembly of Alberta.
